This week at the library — 1 February 2018

February 2, 9:15 am, Story Time – Stories, a craft, and a bit of runnindespicableg around.  Everyone is welcome.

February 2, 6:00 pm, Family Movie – “Despicable Me 3” – Enjoy some cocoa, popcorn and a great movie.  PJs optional.  All children must be accompanied by an adult. Rated PG.

February 3, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, Community Coffeehouse – Off The Cuff will kick off the evening.  This new group blends diverse muOffTheCuffsical interests into a vocal-oriented ensemble performing contemporary folk, acoustic blues, and all things Americana. At 8pm we’ll open the mike for all who wish to try their hand at performing.  Mark your calendars –March 3 Fifth Business returns to the Coffeehouse.

February 4, 3:00 – 5:30pm — Friendly Folk Music Jam Open to acoustic instrument players of any skill level interested in a relaxed, collegial atmosphere to share folk or old-time music. Come share your talent and a simple song (3 or 4 chords). Depending on participants’ feedback, we may try to jam regularly the 2nd Sunday afternoon of each month.

February 17, 11:00am until gone – Winter Carnival Chili, Cornbread and Hot Chocolate – We’ll be selling hot food / drinks at the Peacham Congregational Church with proceeds to benefit Peacham Library.

February 20, 1:15 pm, Tuesday Theatre – “Victoria and Abdul” – Queen victoriaVictoria (Judi Dench) strikes up an unlike friendship with an Indian clerk.  Rated PG-13.

February 21, Tai Chi for Fall Prevention – Beginners 10am – 10:45am, Advanced 11:00 – noon–sponsored by Northeast Kingdom Council on Aging and SASH.  Call 751-0431 to register.

January 5, 7:00, The Personal Side of Syria — What do you really know about Syria? Tamam AbuLateaf, a citizen of Syria who has been studying in Vermont since June,. will put a personal face on Syria through photos and stories of his life and family.

January 7, 12 noon, Lunch Talk — Help at Home with NEK Council on Aging — Heidi Baker, from the NEK Council on Aging, begins a series of monthly lunch talks aimed at helping older Vermonters and their families identify programs for living well as they age in the safety of their own homes .  This program compliments the work SASH has begun in Peacham.  Open to all; soup and bread will be served.

January 8, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour – join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

January 9, 10:00 am, Story Time –Stories and activities for the young at heart.

January 9, 7 – 9pm, Community Coffeehouse presents Pipe and SlippersThe concert begins at 7pm, with an open mike at 8pm.

Would you like to support the library by adopting a book?  There are still a few left from the Holiday Adopt-A-Book program.

  •  Find a book on the list that you’d like to adopt.  All the books are on display at the library.
  •  Tell the Librarian.
  •  You pay for the book.
  •  The Librarian puts a label in the book (if you want).
  •  You get to check the book out first!

This week at the library — August 10, 2014

August 11, 5:15pm, Friends of Peacham Library — The Friends organize events and fundraisers in support of the library with funds raised used to support book purchases and programs.  Please consider joining the Friends and helping in their efforts.

August 11, 6:30pm, Peacham Knitters – Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting. New knitters are welcome to come for help and encouragement.

August 12, 7:00pm, Freedom and Unity: The Vermont Movie — Part Five – Ceres’ Children, takes a deeper look at some of Vermont’s cherished traditions: participatory democracy and the conservation ethic, from the ideas of George Perkins Marsh, one of America’s first environmentalists, to contemporary volunteer groups and activist movements.

August 14, 6:30pm, Herb Club – This month there will be a weed walk and a discussion of herbs that are good for the nervous system.

August 15, 9am, Fiber Friday – Fiber fun for all ages.  This month’s project will be sock animals.

August 16, 10am – 5pm, Friends of Peacham Library Ice Cream at PAMFest – Drop by the tennis courts during PAMFest to buy ice cream (and toppings!) from Friends of Peacham Library.  Your purchase supports book purchases and programs at the library.

August 19 – 21, 9:30 – 11:00am, Mini-Technology Camp – Create and program projects using the Arduino microcontroller.  Must be 9 or older (and yes, adults are welcome) with some coding experience.  Sign up is required as space is limited.  Note, this a week later than originally scheduled.

August 19, 1:15 pm, Tuesday Theatre – Gravity plays a big role in this 2013 film starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.  On a routine spacewalk disaster strikes leaving the two astronauts, tethered together, struggling to survive, while reliving their pasts.    PG-13

August 20, 9am, French Club – Time to practice your French with songs, stories and games.

August 21, 7:15pm, Readers’ Delight – The group will discuss The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith. Contact the library if you would like to borrow a copy of the book.

August 22, 9:00 am, Preschool Story Time stories and crafts for the young and their caregivers.

Of Interest

The summer reading challenge continues.  Just think, if everyone added a marker for every book read in the next few weeks,  would we fill up the fiction columns?  Right now we are at 175 total books for the kids and 162 for the adults.  Remember, the markers can be for any book you read (or listen to) since June 3.  Books do not have to come from our library!

February 4, 7pm, How Children Succeed – Join us for a discussion on How Children Succeed.  While the starting point will be Paul Tough’s book How Children Succeed, the discussion will revolve around how we as a community envision success and what it takes for our children to succeed.  This program is sponsored by Peacham Library and Peacham Elementary School.  Request a copy of the book from the library.

February 5, 7pm, Acoustic Music Night –  CANCELLED this month.

February 7, 9am — Preschool Story Time – Story Time will be the 1st and 4th Fridays this month.  There will stories, crafts and a bit of romping for children of all ages.

February 7, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

February 8, 1 -3pm, Herb Club – This is a chance for those drawn to the use of both medicinal and culinary herbs to get together and have some herb nerd fun. No experience with herbs is necessary and everyone is welcome. February’s topics –How to Make a Good Cup of Tea and Herb Garden Planning

Local Certified Navigator Ellen Gershun will be at the library to assist people with enrolling in Vermont Health Connect. To ensure privacy, assistance will be by appointment only. Call the library to signup before February 11.

February 16, 2-5pm, Winterfest 2014 — Library fundraiser with chili and cider, sledding, snow sculpture contest and bonfire.  Join us at the Peacham Fire House for some winter warming activities and support our local library!

February 18, 1:15 pm, Tuesday Theatre –Daniel Craig is back as James Bond 007 in this 2012 Oscar winning (Music, Sound Editing) PG-13 movie.  Things aren’t falling from the sky, but they might as well be as Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her.  M16 is under attack and 007 must destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

February 20, 7:00pm, Readers’ Delight – The group will discuss A Confederacy of Dunces by John Toole.  The March book will be Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. Contact the library if you need a copy of either book.

New frog pictures are available — Peacham’s Second and Third Weaving Adventures, Jing in Brazil, and Wai Visits New Zealand (check this one often, as he is there for a while and is sending photos back regularly.

This week at the library — January 26, 2014

January 27, 6:30pm, Peacham Knitters – Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting. New knitters are welcome to come for help and encouragement.

January 31, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

February 1, 7pm, Community Coffeehouse – The Community Coffeehouse welcomes back Fifth Business.  5thBusinessKate, and Steve Davie, Heather Alger, Nick Anzalone, and Stuart Corso place a strong emphasis on rousing vocals. Their songs and tunes range from traditional a cappella singing to more complex arrangements with instrumentation by guitar, fiddle, and button accordion. They draw from musical roots set in English, and Celtic tradition, as well as some of Steve’s more contemporary compositions. Comedy, whimsy and fun paired with a heartfelt connection to the history, temperament and soulful roots of traditional English and Celtic song make for a purely British Pub Night right here in Peacham, VT.  An open mike for those who wish to share their music will be available at 8pm.  Coffee, tea, cider and snacks will be provided.  There is a suggested donation of $5 per person to support library programs.

This week at the library — December 1, 2013

December 4, 7pm, Acoustic Music Night.  Bring your instrument(s) and join the jam session, or drop in just to listen and tap your toes to the lively music.

December 5, 7pm, Estate and Planned Giving – Dirk Elston and Daniel Kimbell, Financial Consultants with Passumpsic Financial Advisors will present the ins and outs of estate planning and planned giving.

December 6, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

December 7, 2 – 4pm, High Holiday Tea — Sip a cup of tea and visit with your neighbors. Sample our sweet and savory delights. Take a chance with the raffle.  All to support Friends of Peacham Library.

Holiday Events

UPDATE!  Holiday Adopt a Books are now on display!  Looking for a unique present for that someone special?  Adopt a book at the library? Here’s how it works: Select a book from those available or suggest a book to the librarian.  After you pay the library for the book we’ll put a special adoption label in and check the book out to your special someone.  When the person has read the book, return it for others to enjoy – both the book and your generosity.  Books may be adopted for people, pets, entities, the library, almost anyone.  You can, if you desire, remain anonymous.
