This week at the library — February 21, 2016

February 22, 6:30 pm, Peacham Knitters and Puzzlers— Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting. Or work on the current jigsaw puzzle.

February 26, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour – join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!.

February 27, 11:00 am – ? – Winter Carnival Chili sale – The library will sell chili, cornbread and hot chocolate during the Winter Carnival celebrations. The library will open at 10am as usual with chili sales starting around 11am.  The library will remain open until the chili is gone.

March 1, TOWN MEETING – The library will open after the conclusion of Town Meeting.

March 3, 12 noon, Lunch Talk — Help at Home with NEK Council on Aging — Heidi Baker from the NEK Council on Aging’s returns for another lunch talk on issues relevant to elders and their caregivers..  This program compliments the work SASH has begun in Peacham.  Open to all; soup and bread will be served.

March 4, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour – join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

March 5, 10:00 am, Story Time – Stories and activities for the young at heart.

Of Interest

The renovation project is moving forward!  The first step was the landscaping / drainage work accomplished this last fall.  The second stop was accomplished last weekend — moving all of the sale books downstairs into one room onto nice blue shelves.  Drop by to see the new sale room and maybe buy a book or two!  If you are interested in purchasing a refrigerator / freezer, rear-projection TV, or a stove / oven, contact the library — we will be selling these at quite reasonable prices, with all proceeds going to the renovation project.

January 4, 6:00 pm, Board Meeting — Meetings are open to the public.

January 5, 7:00, The Personal Side of Syria — What do you really know about Syria? Tamam AbuLateaf, a citizen of Syria who has been studying in Vermont since June,. will put a personal face on Syria through photos and stories of his life and family.

January 7, 12 noon, Lunch Talk — Help at Home with NEK Council on Aging — Heidi Baker, from the NEK Council on Aging, begins a series of monthly lunch talks aimed at helping older Vermonters and their families identify programs for living well as they age in the safety of their own homes .  This program compliments the work SASH has begun in Peacham.  Open to all; soup and bread will be served.

January 8, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour – join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

January 9, 1:00pm, Herb Club — Join the members of Herb Club for a discussion pipeandslippersabout herbs and their uses. No experience necessary.

January 9, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, Community Coffeehouse — Pipe and Slippers will open the 2016 season of Community Coffeehouses at Peacham Library. The four member, up and coming, folk/indie band plays guitar, fiddle, electric bass, banjo, octave mandolin, and an occasional drum. They stepped up to the open mike last year, and are now ready for their own set. Use the open mike afterwards to start your musical career!

January 19, 1:15 pm, Tuesday Theatre – Mr. Deeds, a small-town, Vermont tuba player, inherits $20 million only to find himself the target of ruthless businessmen, relatives and other ne’er-do-wells. Garry Loom_smCooper stars in this Frank Capra film about Mr. Deeds going to town.

Of Interest

As part of the current Gilmore Gallery exhibit, there is now a loom available for you to try your hand at weaving!  The librarians will help get you started.  The cloth woven by the community will be used to make towels for the library’s kitchen.

Would you like to support the library by adopting a book?  There are still a few left from the Holiday Adopt-A-Book program.

  •  Find a book on the list that you’d like to adopt.  All the books are on display at the library.
  •  Tell the Librarian.
  •  You pay for the book.
  •  The Librarian puts a label in the book (if you want).
  •  You get to check the book out first!

This week at the library — October 18, 2015

October 19, noon, Friends of Peacham Library –Friends plan great events in support of the library.

October 20, 1:15 pm, Tuesday Theatre – Spencer Tracy, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Ethel Merman and four other all-star comedians star in this mad-cap, zany movie. It’s a crazy world, or maybe a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad one, when eight vacation-bound travelers learn the location of a stolen treasure in a chance meeting with a stranger. Be ready for the laughs and a zany time. Rated G.

October 20, 7:00pm, Asperger’s Support Group – This is the first meeting of a new support group for parents and /or guardians of children, teens, or young adults with Asperger’s syndrome or high functioning autism.

August 18, 1:15 pm, Tuesday Theatre – “Big Hero 6” A young robotics whiz, Hiro Hamada (voiceJoshua Lakin of Ryan Potter), leaps into action with his tech-savvy friends, and his robot companion Baymax to save the metropolis of San Fransokyo. Rated PG.

August 18, 7:00 pm, Health Talk with Dr. Josh – Dr. Josh Lakin will discuss “Planning in Serious Illness: The Conversation.” A talk about how the medical specialty of Palliative Care thinks about these conversations and a brief introduction to some of the tools available for preparing for and recording these conversations with your family or your physician

August 20 7:00 pm, Summer Series – Purposeful Travel – Beatrice DeRocco Ring presents“A Journey of Discovery” Journey with Beatrice as she recreates (over six years) the around-the-world trip her father and uncle made in 1928 (in a single year) using only ships, trains and cars, and taking pictures similar to the ones taken in 1928.

August 29, 7:00 pm, Influential Authors, at Peacham Congregational Church – Biblical scholar, Rev. John Shelby Spong, author of over 24 books, will kick off the series with a talk titled “Re-Claiming the Bible for a Non-Religious World.” Future speakers to be announced. This talk is a fund-raising event, with all donations supporting the library.

September 17, 7:00 pm, Readers’ Delight – The group will discuss A Fighting Chance by Elizabeth Warren. Contact the library if you would like to borrow a copy of the book.

August 9, 4:00 pm, Author Talk with Stuart O’Brien – Nonagenarian and StuartO'Brien Peacham resident, Stuart O’Brien will discuss his book, Wildwood, a World War II love story. Books are available at the library for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting the library.

August 10, 6:30 pm, Peacham Knitters — Peacham Knitters and Puzzlers— Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting. There is also a jigsaw puzzle available for those who prefer this activity.

August 11 – 13 – 17, 9:30 am – 11:00 am – Robotics Camp – Build and program Lego NXT robots. (sign up required by August 7 as space is very limited).

August 13, 6:30 pm, Herb Club – Join the members of Herb Club for an evening herb walk in Peacham. Herb Club is open to anyone, even if you have no experience with herbs.
