July 14, 7pm, Annual Meeting with Mark Breen – Join us for our 204th Annual Meeting and the start of our Summer Series — Earth, Wind, Fire, and Beyond.  Mark Breen will be speaking on Vermont Weather, Past, Present and Future.

July 15, 1:15 pm, Tuesday Theatre – During World War II, a platoon, known as the Monuments Men, were tasked with saving priceless artistic masterpieces and returning them to their rightful owners. PG-13

July 16, 9am, French Club – Time to practice your French with songs, stories and games.  Children and adults welcome!

July 16, 5:15pm, Friends of Peacham Library — Help the Friends plan events in support of Peacham Library.

July 17, 7:00pm, Readers’ Delight – The group will discuss The Garlic Ballads by Mo Yan. Contact the library if you would like to borrow a copy of the book.

July 18, 9am, Fiber Friday – Fiber fun for all ages. This month’s project will be pot holders.

July 18, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

July 19, Game Day – Families 4 – 6pm, Pizza for all 6 – 7pm, Adults 7 – 9pm – Drop by the library to play your favorite games or try a new one. We’ll have chess, Scrabble, Rummy, Wits & Wagers, and Dominion, as well as two new games – Tapple and Cross Ways. As with all gaming events, we encourage you to bring your favorite games to share.

July 21, 6pm, Open Meeting Webinar for Libraries — What does the new open meeting law mean for libraries.  Vermont Department of Libraries will host a webinar, which Peacham Library will join.

July 22, 7:00pm, Freedom and Unity: The Vermont Movie — Part Four – Doers and Shapers, explores the people and institutions that push boundaries in education, progressive movements and civil unions

July 24, 7:00pm, Summer Series – Earth, Wind, Fire, and Beyond – Adam Kane, Director of the Fairbanks Museum, speaking on Shipwrecks of Lake Champlain.

July 25, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

Of Interest

The Mini-Technology Camp has been rescheduled to August 19-21, 9:30 – 11:00am.  The camp is open to ALL, age 9 and older.  The topic will be Arduinos.  Sign up is required.

Our Reading Challenge is heating up!  The adults seem to be building sideways while the kids are going up.  The adults should break 100 fiction books this week, what about the kids?

This week at the Library — June 22, 2014

June 23 6:30pm, Peacham Knitters – Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting. New knitters are welcome to come for help and encouragement.

June 24 – 26, 9:30 – 11:00am – Mini Mathematical Art Camp – Origami, Geodesic domes, and Computer Art. Must be 8 or older. Adults are welcome! Sign up required.

June 24, 7:00pm, Freedom and Unity: The Vermont Movie — Part Two – Under the Surface – Peacham Library will screen this six part film on Vermont on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays throughout the summer.

June 27, 9:00 am, Preschool Story Time stories and crafts for the young and their caregivers.

June 27, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

Summer Programs

What have you been reading?  Are you like the folks who’ve added Bulletin_140623their books to our bulletin board?  Adults are “streaking” ahead on non-fiction, but adults and kids are neck and neck on fiction.

The Vermont Movie continues on June 24 and again on July 8 at 7pm.

June 2, 7:00pm, Peacham Library Board Meeting — Meetings are open to the public.

June 3, 10am, Peter Burns Science Stories at Peacham Elementary School – Peter_BurnsPeacham Library kicks off the summer reading program Fizz, Boom Read with storyteller Peter Burns. You will experience the magic of storytelling and learn about science in everyday life.  Be prepared to me astounded and perplexed.

June 20, 7:00pm, Ragtime Concert with Deborrah Wyndham — Peacham Library presents Deborrah Wyndham for a delightful evening fundraising concert to be held a Peacham Congregational Church.

Summer Programs (a partial list)

FIZZ_BOOM_READ_logo Primary StackedFizz, Boom, Read! — This year’s summer reading program bulletin board challenges you to think about what you read.  For every book you read, add a marker to the bulletin board in the appropriate column — fiction / non-fiction, adult / child.  Who reads more fiction? More non-fiction? More books?  Let’s see how kids and adults stack up.

The following is a partial list of upcoming summer programs.  Watch for details on other possibilities — French Club, Fiber Fridays, and Maker Days are all possible with the help of volunteers.

For kids (camps require sign up)

Drop by to check out new books for May.

We have passes to parks, museums and historical sites available for checkout.  The Vermont Park Pass allows up to 8 people (in a single vehicle) to visit a state park as a day user.  The Vermont Historical Sites Pass allows 8 people (in a single vehicle) to visit for free.  The Echo Pass gets up to 4 people a discounted price of $4 to the museum in Burlington.  The Vermont History Museum and Vermont Heritage Galleries pass grants free admission to these locations in Montpelier and Barre.  And for those wanting to go south instead of west, we have a pass for free entrance to the American Precision Museum in Windsor.

This week at the library — July 7, 2013

July 7, 4-6pm, Artist Reception — Home Grown Furniture features the woodworking of Peacham residents Tim McKay and Jeff Scott. All of the wood they use is grown and harvested on East Hill.

July 8 – 12, 9:30am – 11:am, Summer Reading “Day Camp” – Dig into gardens, caves, archeology and geology. Sign up required; children 5 and under must come with a parent.

July 8, 5:30pm, Henry Homeyer Author Program For the Young and Young at HeartAnnual Meeting — Henry Homeyer will talk about the writing process and read from his children’s book Wobar and the Quest for the Magic Calumet.  Suitable for children and their parents.  Followed by dessert in the garden.

July 8, 7:00pm, Peacham Library Annual Meeting – The 203rd annual meeting!  The meeting will be preceded by an author program for children and adults (see above) and dessert in the garden.  After the meeting gardener Henry Homeyer will kick off the Summer Series “Dig Into Gardening” with a talk on “How to Eat from the Garden All Year.”

July 12, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour —  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

Park Passes are here!  We have passes to Vermont State Parks, Vermont Historical Sites, the American Precision Museum and Vermont’s History Museum.  Each provides free admittance for a group of 4-8 (depending on the pass) and sometimes a discount in the local gift shop, too.  Passes are available to borrow for a week at a time.

Are you a St. Johnsbury Academy student looking for summer reading books?  Look no further than your local library–we have most of the books available either in hard cover, or as an audio or ebook download.  Want to talk about one of your books?  Our Readers’ Delight will be discussing Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close on July 16 at 7:15pm.
