This week at the library — January 17, 2015

January 19, 1:15 pm, Tuesday Theatre – Mr. Deeds, a small-town, Vermont tuba player, inherits $20 million only to find himself the target of ruthless businessmen, relatives and other ne’er-do-wells. Garry Cooper stars in this Frank Capra film about Mr. Deeds going to town.

January 21, 7:00pm, Readers’ Delight – The Martian, by Andy Weir is this month’s book. The February book will be American Nations by Colin Woodard. Contact the library if you would like to borrow either book.

January 22 10am-noon, Coffee Hour – join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

January 23, 9am – 3pm – Clearance Book Sale – Take advantage of the lowest prices ever in the book sale as we make room for future renovations.  Books will sell at $5 / bag or as individually priced.

January 25, 6:30 pm, Peacham Knitters and Puzzlers— Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting. Or work on the current jigsaw puzzle.

February 6, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, Community Coffeehouse – Fifth Business is back for another set at the Community Coffeehouse. There will be an open mike after their set.

As part of the current Gilmore Gallery exhibit, there is now a loom available for you to try your hand at weaving!  The librarians will help get you started.  The cloth woven by the community will be used to make towels for the library’s kitchen.

September 28, 7pm, Board Meeting — Meetings are open to the public.

October 1, ALL DAY, Fall Foliage Day in Peacham – The library will be open at 9am and close at 7pm.
9am – 4pm, Book Sale
10am – noon, Book Signing –
Peacham authors will sell / sign copies of their books.
6:30pm, Free Movie –
The film stars Ellen Burstyn as the owner of The Spitfire Grill.

October 2, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

October 3, 10:00 am, Story Time – Read with a horse – There will be a special guest at story time – a miniature horse! Stories will be about horses and other animals that help people.

October 5, noon, Friends of Peacham Library –Friends plan great events in support of the library.

October 5, 7:00 pm, Board Meeting — Meetings are open to the public.

October 10, 10:00am – noon – Fiber Fest – Celebrate National Spinning and Weaving week by learning a weaving technique – kumihimo, ply-split braiding, weaving on a CD and other simple, hand held methods of weaving will be taught.

October 10, 1:00 pm, Herb Club – Join the members of Herb Club for a discussion about herbs and their uses.

October 11, 4:00 – 6:00 pm, Artists’ Reception – Cecelia Kane presents “How Do I Feel Today” – hand printed self-portraits on beaded, quilted and embroidered vintage family hankies.

This week at the library — September 20, 2015

September 22, 6:00 pm, Book Signing, 7:00pm, Author Talk with Tim McKay warbrideTim will sign copies of his book, “Letters to a War Bride,” from 6-7 then present his talk “Search for My Father’s War.” The book and talk are the culmination of three years of reading his father’s wartime letters and the 25 day trip to Europe to discover the people and places he described.

September 25, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

July 4, 10am – 3pm – Book Sale – Drop by the library before, during, and after the parade to shop the best selection of books for sale. Prices as low as twenty five cents!

July 9, 7:00pm, Summer Series – Purposeful Travel – Julie Lang presentsJulie_sm “Going Solo.”  With the travel companions of fantasy, the Lonely Planet, and local guides, Julie often chooses to ‘go it alone.’  On a summer night in Peacham, we’ll travel together, spending a little time in places like Mongolia, Bhutan, Cambodia and Peru.

July 11, 10:00am, Story Time –Stories and activities for the young at heart.

July 13, 7:00pm – Library Annual Meeting with Robert VanVranken VanVranken Join us for our 205th Annual Meeting and the second of our Summer Series speakers. Robert will present “Thoughts on Travel,” as he contrasts a slow/meditative hike across Austria is with the hectic return home in a talk about human nature and various ways we move through space.

Passport to Vermont Libraries Program continues — Drop by the library to pick up a passport and start visiting libraries throughout Vermont.  We’ll give out prizes at the end of the summer for folks who have visited the most libraries.  More details can be found at http://www.vermontlibraries.org/passport/.

This week at the library — June 22, 2015

June 22 – 24, 1:00 – 2:300pm – Minecraft Programming Camp – learning the finer points of Minecraft Programming with Jerri Kohl. Space is limited — Call to see if space is available. Suitable for ages 9+.

June 22, 6:30pm, Peacham Knitters — Peacham Knitters and Puzzlers— Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting. There is also a jigsaw puzzle available for those who prefer this activity.

June 23 – 25, 9:30 – 11:00am – Art Camp – Try your hand at a variety of art projects.  Tuesday is book art (using old books to create art pieces), Wednesday is Tessellations with Annie Sproston, Thursday is string art.  Each day is independent of the others, however, space is limited — Call to see if space is available. Suitable for ages 7 and up.

January 3, 7-9pm, Coffee House – The winter Community Coffee House returns to Peacham Library.  We welcome folk singer Katherine Keenan as our first headliner.  And remember, the second hour has an open mike–dust off instruments, loosen up your vocal chords, and drop in to strut your stuff.

It’s not to late to adopt a book for the holidays! HolidayAdopt Here’s how it works: Select a book from those available or suggest a book to the librarian.  After you pay the library for the book we’ll put a special adoption label in and check the book out to your special someone.  When the person has read the book, return it for others to enjoy – both the book and your generosity.  Books may be adopted for people, pets, entities, the library, almost anyone.

For the harder to find books you can buy and keep, check out our ongoing book sale.  The books are nicely arranged by genre and subject!  What’s not to like about prices generally under $5?

July 6, 4 – 6pm, Artists Reception, Mr. Gilmore’s View – Drop in to meet Ed Kadunc and to view his paintings and drawings of the Peacham area.

July 8, 7:00pm, Freedom and Unity: The Vermont Movie — Part Three – Refuge, Reinvention and Revolution, explores innovators, the creation of the interstate highways and the high price of “eminent domain,” and the “hippies” who established roots in Vermont

July 10, 6:30pm, Herb Club – Learn how to use herbs for both medicinal and culinary purposes. Herbal testing with the Ayurvedic herb, Gymnema, Destroyer of Sweet. Followed by another herb walk.  Note new day!

July 11, 9:00 am, Preschool Story Time stories and crafts for the young and their caregivers.

We added quite a few new items to the collection in June.  Drop in during regular hours to check them out.  You can also send us an email to have us hold an item (or two, or three, or…).   Remember we have passes for Vermont State Parks, Vermont Historical Sites, Vermont History Museum, Echo Museum, and The Precision Museum available to borrow, too!
