This week at the library — May 3, 2015

May 7, 7pm, Biochar with Michael Low — An evening talk with MashaPeacham’s Michael Low, who will explain the process they use at Green Fire Farm to make Biochar and go on to tell you why you, too, might want to use Biochar to enrich your soil and grow better plants.  As a teaser — Biochar is ‘Char’coal produced from wood or plant ‘Bio’mass. This charcoal will absorb nutrients like a sponge, holding them in the soil near the plants for an incredibly long time.

May 8, 10am-noon, Coffee Hour –  join us for a cup of coffee or tea, a sweet or two and good conversation. Suitable for all ages!

May 9, 1pm, Herb Club — This year Herb Club will be featuring a seasonally appropriate herb of the month.  Stay tuned for this month’s herb!

Looking Ahead

May 11, 6:30, Peacham Knitters — Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting.  Spinners, ply-splitters, quilters and all fiber artists are welcome!  We will also have a jigsaw puzzle for those who like to chat and work on puzzles.

May 11, 7pm, Board Meeting – Meetings are open to the public.

May 12, 7pm, Panel Discussion on Autism — Pediatrician Dr. Josh Kantrowitz, Special Educator Andrea Wasson, and Psychologist Dr. Judith Markey for this panel to provide information about autism, diagnosis, effective interventions / treatments and community supports.AlanGreenleaf
This multidisciplinary forum hopes to begin effective professional collaboration in our community as we support individuals with autism and their families.

May 16, 10am, Story Time — NOTE the later start! – Stories and activities for the young at heart.

May 16, 7pm, Concert with Alan Greenleaf and The Doctor — Peacham’s own “folk” duo present a fundraising concert in support of Peacham Library, held at Peacham Congregational Church.  Come out for an evening of music from the Kingdom and support the library

This week at the library — March 29, 2015

March 31, 7pm, Cycle of Rice talk by Jan Reynolds — Peacham Library welcomes jan-reynolds-3Jan Reynolds, author (14 children’s books and two adult books), wilderness photographer, world record holder and one of America’s best known and articulate spoke’s person on mountaineering.  Cycle of Rice will dig into concepts of environmental sustainability and the connection of our great human family. The talk explores rice farming in Bali, spends time with Indonesian rice farmers to learn why and how they live sustainably and then explores the link of celebrations around the world, illustrating we are one human family celebrating life on earth.  Find out more about Jan at her website — http://janreynolds.com/index.html.

April 7, 7pm, Health Talk with Dr. Josh – Dr. Josh, Peacham’s Health Officer, will discuss Lyme disease, which is moving further north towards the Northeast Kingdom. Learn how to protect yourself, what the symptoms are and what the current methods of treatment are.

April 10, 3-5pm, Artists’ Reception – Elementary Art – Drop in to meet the young artists from Peacham Elementary School for their annual art show in Gilmore Gallery.SchoolArt

April 11, 1pm, Herb Club – This year Herb Club will be featuring a seasonally appropriate herb of the month. Join us for a conversation about coltsfoot, that dandelion-like flower that appears along roadsides as soon as the snow melts. Find out why the image of its leaf was the mark of an apothecary in Medieval Europe. Herb Club is open to anyone, even if you have no experience with herbs.

Of Interest

Drop by the library to see the new art show — School Art — a display of the work created by our students at Peacham Elementary School beginning April 3.  There will be a reception April 10 from 3-5pm.

The reading challenges continue — the sixth reading challenge — a book set in Vermont. You might try Understood Betsy (Fisher), Witness (Hess), MIdwives (Bohjalian), Stranger in the Kingdom (Mosher), or Borderlines (Mayor). Leave a post with your favorite one!

Friends of Peacham Library are collecting items for the Spring Flea Market. This is a great way to lighten your spring cleaning and help Peacham Library at the same time.   All profits fund books and programs.  If you have any good clean items to donate you may drop them at the library or call the library to arrange a pickup, any time before April 20th.

March 24, 5:15pm, Friends of Peacham Library – Help the Friends plan events and fundraisers in support of Peacham Library.

March 24, 6:30pm, Peacham Knitters – Bring your knitting or other handwork for an evening of creativity and chatting. New knitters are welcome to come for help and encouragement.

March 27, 7pm, Health Talk with Dr. Josh — The Impact of Concussion — AT PEACHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Research from the last decade has put a spotlight on the dangers and potential long-term effects of concussion.  Please come for a presentation on head injury followed by a community conversation.   We will focus mainly on concussion in children but everyone is welcome.   Hosted jointly by Peacham Library and Peacham Elementary School.

March 28, 9:00 am, Preschool Story Time – CANCELLED this week, join us next week (April 4) for stories and crafts for all ages.
