Q. What is Kanopy and how does it work?

Kanopy is an award-winning video streaming service providing access to more than 30,000 independent and documentary films ─  titles of unique social and cultural value from The Criterion Collection, The Great Courses, Media Education Foundation, and thousands of independent filmmakers.

Getting Started

What do I need?
  • Tablet, smartphone, computer, or TV with streaming capabilities
  • Library card number and password (only needed one time in the registration process).
  • Once you log in, you will create your personal account with your email address and unique password.
  • Kanopy app or updated browser software (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari, etc.)

Playing Videos

How many titles can I play?

7 titles (plays) per month.

What is the loan period?

72 hours (3 days). Once a play credit is logged, you will have a full 72 hours to watch the video as many times as you would like without using another play credit, even if a new month starts and your credits reset. A play credit will be used once at least 5 seconds of a video has been played.

Can I download videos?

No. At this time, videos can only be streamed online.

What if I use all available play credits?

If you use all available play credits for the month, you will not be able to play any videos until the 1st of the next month (at midnight) when your play credits reset. Unused play credits will not roll over into the next month. Additional play credits are not available for purchase at this time. 

Play Credit Exceptions

Kanopy Kids
Videos from the Kanopy Kids section will not require any play credits to view. Feel free to watch as many videos from Kanopy Kids as you’d like without seeing a reduction in your play credits!

The Great Courses
Viewing episodes from The Great Courses will not require play credits.

Why can’t I borrow more than 7 titles in a month?

In order to offer the Kanopy service to all Peacham Library users, we have budgeted 7 titles per month. 


If there is a problem with a video, where can I get help?

Start with the help topics at Kanopy. If you need further assistance, send a message to Kanopy. For the quickest response, be sure to include as many helpful details as possible in your message. 

I didn’t receive the message from Kanopy instructing me to verify my email address. What happened?

Sometimes these messages are filtered to your Spam or Junk Mail folders. Be sure to check these folders and allow to send messages to your Inbox. 

Can I suggest titles to be added to Kanopy?

Yes. Because Kanopy provides the entire catalog of titles, please contact Kanopy directly to suggest titles. The Library cannot accommodate these requests.
